Our client is a large commercial law firm with offices in the heart of Manchester city centre. This practice seeks a tax professional to join their growing tax litigation team. This role would suit either: a tax lawyer with litigation experience and a minimum of 5 years’ PQE; a solicitor from the HMR&C’s internal solicitor’s office; or an experienced tax investigation specialist who has dealt with taking cases to the commissioner (tribunals etc). You will need some proven tax litigation experience and also experience of negotiating settlements with HMR&C.
Day to day your role will involve: • Assisting clients with disputes relating to direct and indirect taxes. • Working with partners and tax counsel to prepare cases for tribunal, the Court of Appeal and the European Courts of Justice. • Building relationships with and working closely with colleagues in other offices and notably London. • Networking with other professionals and work referrers. • Considerable contact with clients and HMR&C. • You will need an understanding of both tax technical issues and arguments and HMR&C’s disputes process. • Negotiation of settlements and where appropriate restitution/damages with HMR&C. Both direct and indirect tax backgrounds will be considered for this role, and it includes the opportunity to deal with a wide variety of taxes. Salary is dependent of qualification and experience. In terms of personal attributes you will need to be someone who works well to tight deadlines and who enjoys negotiations. It is likely that you will be detail conscious and self motivated.
