This top tier firm have decided to seriously compete in the Research and Development tax relief game. The firm wants a talented high performer with the knowledge to proactively develop the R&D client base and build their own team.
Upon joining you would inherit a portfolio of clients that primarily consist of SMEs. The team concentrate within the IT and FS sectors but there is a lot of scope to win clients within the fintech and architecture sectors.
Your first task of business will be to thoroughly understand the processes that are currently being followed. You can then choose to either critique and improve them or scrap the current processes and put in place your own. You can even rework the fee structures of the R&D services if you feel they are not appropriate or competitive. In other words you will be making all the strategic decisions for the firm.
The corporate tax team seniors, assistant managers and managers are already completing R&D claims (with a 100% success rate). The challenge will be for you to assess in which areas their skills are lacking and develop training to upskill these individuals as they will continue to assist you with completing the claims.
Once you have settled in, you will have the challenge of working out the business plan for the team. The corporate tax partners know there are many clients in the firms current client base who are eligible to claim. This will be a relatively untapped market for you to exploit – low hanging fruit. The partners will be on hand to support you in any element of business development ranging from how to make first contact to attending initial meetings and sales pitches.
So where could you be in 12 months? 24 months? 36 and beyond?
The partners want you to be a success within the firm and they want you to stick around to see the fruition of that success.
Within 12 months, you’ll have all the R&D processes singing to your tune. You will have trained your current resources and have started on developing business.
Within 24 months, you will have fine-tuned your business development and have recruited dedicated R&D specialists to be working directly for you.
The partners want you to reach partnership within the firm. However, if you decide that partnership is not on the cards for you, then they will work out a remuneration package based on the success of the R&D team.
