Firstly, the team going through a transition of unparalleled growth in the R&D sector. The team is doing so well in fact, that it’s consistently winning work from the Big 4. Not an easy feat as I’m sure you can imagine. Such growth will benefit you enormously if you were to join at this stage. Firstly, you will always be kept busy working with a diverse and exciting client base ranging from the sparky start-ups to large corporate engagements. Experience that will develop you as a professional. Furthermore, such growth equates to A LOT of promotion. Here there are no glass ceilings for engineers which is unusual to find in accountancy firms. This speaks volumes about the kind of firm this is. In fact, one of the partners heading up the team came from an engineering background.
The reason the team win new work is because they are experts in the field of R&D (across their wide range of sectors such as … and you will become one too if you were to take a position at this firm. Each member of the team has undergone rigorous training in R&D legislation and extensive preparation in how to manage engagements and liaise with clients. Therefore by the end of the training, you too will be an expert in R&D but also have perfected numerous ‘soft skills’ which will allow you to flourish in a corporate environment.
On the day to day, you will be visiting client’s premises to gather information on their activities. Due to this, your job here will never be a dull one. It is part of your job to constantly be learning about new technology. You shall also continuously develop your own knowledge on the technical and financial side of things to maintain your edge. Then you will collate the information you have gathered and assess their eligibility under the R&D scheme. From this, you will write in depth technical reports to submit to HMRC. This could involve liaising with both internal and external tax teams are to ensure the tax returns and computations correctly reflect the outcome of your technical assessments. Clients and HMRC may well have queries along the way and so as their main point of contact, it’s all up to you!
Once you get a grip of the role and start to shine, you will be promoted to a whole new level. You will be actively supervising and training the less experience R&D members in the team. You will be revising the technical and financial assessments of other members of the team. Instead of just attending client meetings, you will be leading them. You will also get a chance to challenge yourself with business development – developing and promoting the Moore Stephens R&D tax offering.
‘I know it’s a cliché, but the team here is everything’
This statement was mentioned to me by one of the partners. It struck me as a shame that such a statement has lost its validity when repeated mindlessly by every employer out there. Yet sitting before me was someone who really meant it. From an objective standpoint, their efforts are apparent – they have enrolled a ‘buddy scheme’ to help you settle in and they regularly organise team outings and events. However, their investment in the team is more than this. The partners really care about the fit of personalities and have created an open environment where the exchange of opinions and ideas are genuinely valued.
These are qualities that I will never be able to communicate via this advertisement. However, if you were to meet with the partners, you would instantly realise these qualities are very much a reality at this firm.
