Working for a firm that has limited growth potential will severely curtail your ability to advance. This is an obvious statement, but one that gets ignored more often than you might imagine. Fast growing firms will need to hire and promote. If your team is expanding and has a desperate need to promote, even a standard average performance can lead to promotion. Partners may not like to promote average performing staff, but I have seen them do it over and over again. Necessity and the need to hit targets will drive this. Don’t believe me? Have a look around your peer group. I bet you can think of at least one person who has done well due to circumstances rather than ability. Imagine what you can do as a high performer in a fast growing firm.
The number one way for a senior tax professional to get promoted is to work for a fast growing firm. In other words to be in the right firm at the right time. Fast growing firms offer you more scope to stand out and greater opportunities for promotion.
You don’t need a job, but you might look at a better opportunity.
My client understands that high performers need a compelling reason to leave their role and move to another firm. The head of tax knows that talented people are smart, savvy, discriminating and not desperate to move.
This is a ranked practice with a significant international network and an extremely successful corporate tax team. The corporate tax team has no problem attracting work and is one of the most profitable sections in the firm. The firm has a high ratio of partners to staff which means greater partner contact for you as a senior professional. Clients are primarily AIM listed companies and sizeable SME’s from a diverse range of industries.
What will the role involve? You will be working alongside a head of tax with a view to developing further work from internal and external clients. This is not a pure BD role but a mixture of BD, client development and the technical. This would be a great role for someone who enjoys dealing with a range of different responsibilities. You will ideally have a niche in an area like FS, property , R&D or other area. This role will allow you to develop your niche and still deal with more generalist work.
You will join as an associate director and build a business case to partner. You will be working closely with the head of tax, which will put you in the spotlight.
The firm has a proven track record of growth and can offer you examples of senior managers who have joined and made partner.
