Our client’s Tax Technical and Training team includes several sub-teams, specialising in risk management, technology, training, and knowledge & collaboration, all working to support the firm’s other departments within the tax stream. Ranging from recent graduates to experienced specialists, they co-operate with colleagues and stakeholders from across the stream to deliver practical solutions for clients. Joining them, you’ll be given the freedom to work independently, but also the support you need, when you need it. It’s a chance to use your specialist skills, outside of a conventional client-facing role, and to be part of a collaborative team that plays an essential role in ensuring the success of the firm.

The firm’s specialist Innovation & Technology Group comprises engineers, software programmers and scientists as well as specialist finance professionals such as auditors and tax accountants all of whom are experienced in claiming R&D tax relief. The Innovation and Technology team provide the following services:

  • Claiming R&D tax relief
  • R&D Allowances (RDAs)
  • Grants
  • Patent Box
  • International R&D relief


The role                          

As an engineering graduate you should consider R&D Tax because:

  • You will get to conduct technical interviews of senior engineers, and hone your technical communication and writing skills.
  • You will learn about the cutting edge of innovation in great detail through your client interviews.
  • Your portfolio of clients will exist across a wide variety of engineering sectors, including mechanical, manufacturing and electronic engineering.

Key responsibilities        

This is a client facing role where the consultant will be working with customers from a wide range of industry sectors undertaking development activities within the field of Mechanical Engineering. A key aspect for this role will be the ability to translate complex ideas into non-technical concepts and communicate these to a broad client base. You’ll also be:

  • Undertaking the technical assessment of claims and producing the technical summary (mostly for projects with challenges in the field of mechanical engineering or associated sub disciplines) which will be submitted to the tax authorities (HMRC)
  • Identification of qualifying R&D projects and expenditure through participation in technical discussions with clients
  • Ensuring R&D claims meet the requirements of the relevant tax legislation and guidelines (the new joiner will be trained in-house on tax matters through a thorough internal induction and training programme)
  • Liaison with the firm’s technical tax staff on the preparation of tax documents comprising these R&D claims for submission of claims to HMRC
  • First point of contact with client
  • Supporting R&D Tax Relief claims in the event of HMRC R&D enquiries
  • Continuously developing own knowledge and skills and to keep technical knowledge up to date
  • Representing the Firm at seminars and mechanical engineering related events


Skills and attributes

  • Technical expertise – you should have an MSc, MEng or PhD in an engineering discipline including, but not limited to aerospace engineering, automotive engineering, design engineering, manufacturing /industrial engineering, railway engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, mecatronics/material sciences, process engineering, metallurgical engineering. This in combination with a business degree would be an advantage.
  • Alternatively someone with more than 2 years of industry experience with a Bachelor degree in one of the 2 aforementioned disciplines.
  • Communication – you should be confident in your verbal communication and have excellent technical writing skills.
  • Collaboration – you should enjoy working in a dynamic team, where each individual plays their part in accomplishing a collective goal.
  • Organisation – you should understand the importance of planning, and how to balance being meticulous yet efficient.
  • Ambition – you should be driven, keen to develop, and leverage new opportunities.
  • Excellent communication (both spoken and written)
  • Strong numerical ability
  • Curiosity, awareness and an interest in the fields of science, technology and innovation
  • Be highly proactive in the approach to new work opportunities
  • Team player and ability to work on own initiative
  • Able to project a professional, credible image
  • Trustworthy and able to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Able to travel to clients’ premises for meetings and on-site reviews as well as other offices as needed
