In-House Group Head of VAT, Financial Services

Midlands-based with hybrid working

Six-figure salary, 30-60% bonus & benefits

A leading financial services business has exclusively retained Pro-Tax in their search for an impressive Group Head of Indirect Tax. The Head of Indirect Tax position acts as a key senior member of the Group Tax team. Reporting directly to the Group Head of Tax, this position is purposed to ensure that the business continues to meet all indirect tax compliance responsibilities (principally VAT), alongside identifying opportunities and promoting initiatives to mitigate the tax liabilities of the business.

An additional key area is the leadership, motivation, and development of (multidisciplinary) direct reports to meet Group indirect taxes governance responsibilities. The Head of Indirect Tax will work closely with senior tax, finance and commercial stakeholders to develop and implement strategy across these areas. More detailed accountabilities to this role will include:

  • Ensure the timely preparation and delivery to the tax authorities of all relevant returns in line with statutory deadlines in both the UK and overseas and ensure the Group's VAT liability is consistent with expectations
  • Identify and promote initiatives to optimise the VAT position of the Group, e.g. taking advantage of developments in VAT law and practice
  • Take responsibility for all dealings with the tax authorities, including correspondence and negotiations, for indirect taxes, subject to review on major issues
  • Liaise closely with divisional tax leaders and other tax/finance stakeholders to ensure the Group's VAT profile is fully considered when implementing tax planning and other business initiatives
  • Work closely with the Group Head of Tax and divisional tax leaders as appropriate, to ensure that indirect taxes are fully considered in all projects
  • Work closely with the appropriate Heads of Investments to ensure VAT is incorporated into investment strategy decisions
  • Seek continuous improvements in the operation of indirect taxes compliance and reporting processes and provide leadership and direction for the take on of new work
  • Develop and maintain a dialogue with the executive committee and the senior management group to ensure an understanding at executive level of the continuing development of legislation and practice for indirect taxes, as relating to financial services
  • Ensure provisions in the areas of indirect taxes are properly calculated and disclosed in the statutory accounts & FCA returns, if appropriate, considering known tax exposures
  • Take the internal lead on litigation for indirect taxes, including the seeking of approval from the relevant Boards
  • Respond to consultations undertaken by Government, the industry association and other bodies and lobby on behalf of the business to ensure its interests are represented and promoted
  • Oversee the VAT affairs in non-UK jurisdictions
  • Agree with HMRC the scope and amount of the annual PAYE Settlement Agreement
  • Maintain strong processes for the timely payment of indirect taxes and the amount agreed under the PAYE Settlement Agreement, for the correct posting of recoveries and liabilities and reconciliation of the appropriate accounts

The successful candidate

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following (essential) criteria:

  • ACA/CTA qualified or tax lawyer

  • Extensive experience with VAT compliance and advisory; must be technically strong and confident to advise (& challenge where necessary) executive stakeholders

  • Experience within the financial services and negotiating partial exemptions

  • Experience in managing ongoing relationships with tax authorities for indirect taxes

  • Accustomed to leading a team and operating at Tax Director level, either in-house or professional services

The following would be desirable (but not essential):

  • Any conceptual familiarity with wider taxes as relating to the above

  • Any experience with indirect tax litigations, tax digitalisation or process improvement

  • Any prior exposure to overseas tax regimes
