Your new role

The Tax Department of this global insurance business is comprised of a dynamic team of tax professionals managing the groups internal tax matters and compliance processes as well supporting other internal functions and businesses across the groups network across the globe.

This newly created role is to manage all tax governance activity for the group.Reporting to the Tax Policy & Governance Senior Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and developing the tax governance and controls framework. This will include working closely across the Tax team, as well as with third party providers and group colleagues collaboratively.

The role requires a tax professional with a strong interest in governance and risk with a proven track record of balancing different and varied projects. This role will have exposure to many areas including the executive team and the teams across the business. It is important the candidate can communicate complex tax concepts, both around risk and the underlying tax legislation, concisely and effectively.

The role will work with both the Transfer Pricing Manager and Indirect Tax Manager, utilizing their tax specialisms, to enhance and monitor tax risks and controls.

The successful candidate will focus on the tax governance framework, which is currently European focused, however as the Tax remit is expanding into Asia Pac, South and Central America, the role will naturally expand into those areas. The Tax team is mainly based in London, with a team member in Frankfurt. Due to the European expansion of the organisation, this role could be based in either London or Luxembourg.

If based in Luxembourg, some regular travel to London may be required in the first 6 months. Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Head of Tax and the Tax Policy & Governance Senior Manager on all matters relating to Tax Governance;
  • Manage, maintain and develop tax risk and controls framework and related document architecture. This includes responding to new and perceived tax risks and addressing control weaknesses as well as assisting Tax to embed new or changed activity where required.
  • Ensure framework fulfils European Tax authorities expectations in the area of risk and controls, and that appropriate documentation is prepared - eg UK HMRC Business Risk Review;
  • Preparation of quarterly reporting packs for Senior Executives, Board and other management committees, covering all Tax department responsibilities;
  • Assist with the maintenance of, and adherence to, the Liberty Tax Strategy;
  • Develop and maintain SAO controls, procedures, control testing and attestation, as business change requires review and change;
  • Support Compliance in maintenance of CCO controls and procedures;
  • Support the groups Tax's operation of enterprise level risk and controls attestation & testing;
  • Develop relationships with internal stakeholders including Finance Control, Risk Management and Internal Audit;
  • Operate as part of the EUMDR/DAC6 support team;
  • Support wider group projects, where input requested by US Tax colleagues;
  • Undertake business partnering activity to develop and strengthen the Tax Team's relationship with stakeholders;
  • Liaise with external stakeholders, including professional advisors, tax authorities;


What you'll need to succeed

  • Qualified CA, ACA or CTA (or European equivalent)
  • Strong relationship skills and an ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally
  • Experience of developing, assessing, reviewing and testing of tax risks and controls.
  • Experience of carrying out impact assessments and implementing required solutions, including updates to processes
  • Proven ability to plan and achieve deadlines.
  • Proven track record of delivering pragmatic solutions to internal stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of UK tax compliance and risk management regimes, and working knowledge of similar European and US regimes;
  • A good understanding of accounting standards (including IFRS and US GAAP);
  • Taking personal accountability and responsibility for getting things done. It includes a willingness to go beyond what is required in a given situation, overcome or avoid obstacles or barriers to achieve successful outcomes;
  • The ability to align oneself with the needs, priorities and goals of the broader Liberty organisation. It involves exhibiting high professional standards in the face of rapid and unpredictable organisational and industry change and is demonstrated through objectivity, courage and fairness across all situations;
  • Excellent administration skills and able to manage priorities.
  • Good Microsoft and power point skills.
  • Role may involve adhoc day trips to European locations, but no regular overseas travel expected
  • The group has a pan-European corporate footprint, so a second language (French, German, Spanish) would be an advantage, but not essential.
  • Role can be Luxembourg or London based.
